West Chiltington 2 Lavant 4

West Chiltington out-muscled their visitors with their physical strength to claim the three points in this Premier Division clash.

Lavant seemed devoid of self-belief in the first quarter hour, which resulted in Dan Clayton hitting the visitors' woodwork early and Chiltintons striker deflecting a cross into the visitors goal in the 12th minutes, which put the homeside in front.

To their credit, the Chichester side recovered their confidence and the rest of the first half was a thrilling spectacle, with both sides equally balanced. Mike Bartley forced a fine save from Chiltington 'keeper Jordan Mitchell, whilst Lavant goalie, Neil Sanson made two crisp saves from Gary Weedon and Charlie Monaghan at the other end.

In between, James Sandford drilled a Mike Neville corner home on 24 minutes to level the score before half-time.

Lavant made the same error as before in the first quarter hour of the second half, but this time were punished by Weedon's 55th minute header and Craig Dawson's finish on 65 minute's.

Any hopes of a fight back were crushed when Craig Pulling converted a penalty in 69th minute.  The visitors were now fighting back and Sandford again scored, this time from a Matt Lyttle corner in 76th minute. But it was too little, too late.

Despite changing formation for a last ditch attempt to get back in the game, Lavant could not improve the score line.

Visitors' Manager, David Parker commented "We competed in the first half; didn't turn up for the second; and were overcome by a physically stronger side who deserved their win."

Match Report 23rd February

Lavant Reserves 2 Vardar VIP 5

With Lavant's Premier Division game cancelled attention focused on the Reserves home tie.

Vardar, the current league leaders, ended up comfortable winners at the end of this Div 3 South encounter.

But the homeside started brightly and went ahead when Alex Holmes headed home a Dave Maclean corner on 25 minutes. But 4 minutes later Lavant conceded a penalty  and Jerry Manning put Vardar level from the spot.

The homeside seemed to lose self belief and went further behind 5 minutes from half-time, when Manning headed home. Lavant nearly levelled matters when Leon Mears forced a fine save from keeper, Westley Campbell.

A turning point in the game came after the interval when substitute, Mike Bartley, clipped the crossbar for Lavant, when the homeside might otherwise have drawn level. Instead Dida Petrov hit a sweet free-kick home for Vardar on 63 minutes.

Steven Peachey made it 4-1 but Louis Weller's cross headed home by Lavant's Dan Mortimer a minute later gave the homeside a lifeline.

But Vardar sealed their win when Tony Gallagher found the net from a defensive mix up 10 minutes from the final whistle.

Match Report 16th February

Barnham Reserves 1 Lavant 5

Despite a depleted squad, Lavant made it two wins out of two in 2013.

The visitors exerted early pressure with Tom Parker, Dave Knight and James Brooks going close to opening Lavant's account. Mike Bartley did net but was ruled offside.

The breakthrough however came with James Sandford's finish on 27 minutes. Newcomer Stuart Smith combined with Knight to put Brooks through for the visitors' second 5 minutes before the interval.

The Chichester side went further ahead after the restart with two goals in two minutes from Smith and Knight; Bartley being the supplier of both.

Dave Maclean set Knight up but his effort was brilliantly saved by Barnham 'keeper's Matt Redman. Smith just couldn't turn home the rebound.

Sandford hit his second on 70 minutes with Bartley again being the supplier. Barnham did grab a consolation goal through Jake Endicott seconds before the final whistle.

Lavant manager, David Parker, commented:"With four key players missing, I was anxious before the game, but all the squad rose to the occasion. I'm full of admiration for all the boys."

Lavant: N.Sanson, R.Gabb, C.Coe, T.Parker, M.Lyttle, D.Knight, J.Brooks, M.Stevens, J.Sandford, M.Bartley, S.Smith. Subs: D.Maclean, B.Thomas, M.Stella

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the second all round Super-STAR challenge, the Chichester 10k.

It was a great day out, which saw a LFC Running Team of Mike, Ben, Stuart, Richard, Mel, Jon, Mike and Neil take part and complete the Chichester 10k on a cold but dry February Sunday morning.

Not only did the runners brighten up the running course wearing their yellow Lavant shirts, but they also topped up on their fitness, racked up some extra points for the Super-STAR challenge, but more importantly raised between them over two hundred pounds for St Wilfred's Hospice.  Thank you to the runners and everyone who sponsored them.

It would be great to double the numbers for next year's event.

An account of the event, the individual times and further photos of the team during the 10k run have been posted on the Social Events web-page.

Match Report 9th February

Newtown Villa 2 Lavant 3

Man-of-the-Match, James Brooks, 57th minute header was the goal that gave Lavant the full 3 points in their opening game of 2013 at Chalcroft Lane. But, two subsequent controversial refereeing decisions might have led to a different outcome.

For the opening 10 minutes the two sides were evenly matched. Villa's Matt Russell came close from his side's early free-kick, whilst Mike Bartley forced a stop from 'keeper Keelan Belcher at the other end. Then, Lavant gradually took the ascendancy but failed to convert their chances into goals; with Belcher's save from Brooks and Jodey Rowlands block from Bartley's mid-air volley, being the highlights of several attempts at goal.

Lavant manager, David Parker, was just feeling his side might rue these failures to score, when captain Matt Stevens, ended a slick Brooks-Gabb-Seacombe move with a stunning 20 yard strike into the top corner on 25 minutes. The homeside, who had not looked like scoring, were then awarded a free-kick just outside the "D" and Dan Hendrie sweetly struck home the equaliser 11 minutes from the interval.

But, after the restart, the visitors struck twice through Bartley 51 minutes and Brooks six minutes later and seemed set for a comfortable win.

Then, came the two momentous decisions. Ben Purgavie was adjudged to have fouled Russell in the box and the "Blues" striker converted the spot-kick in the 69th minute to put Villa back in contention. Before the restart, Lavant's Jon Wright, was shown a second yellow card and sent from the field of play for arguing the decision. But 10 man Lavant held out the last 20 minutes to earn their win.

Finally this weekend Lavant completed their first league fixture since the 8th December, after an eight week lay off due to bad weather.

With the first team away cup fixture against Hunston being called off in the morning, it was down to a early morning pitch inspection to see if  Raughmere Park was dry enough to play after all the rain in the week.

With manager Mel Milburn very keen to play the game the groundsman finally caved in and agreed for the game to go ahead.

The match itself saw Lavant winning the game convingly three-nil with goals from Leon Mears on his debut for the club, Martin Ayers and Alex Holmes.

Postponed Games

This weekends home games, 5th January vs Witttering and 6th January vs Wittering Sundays have been postponed due to the flooding damaged caused to the village hall.  It is hoped that weather permitting games can be resumed at Lavant and Raughmere Park the following weekend.

On behalf of Lavant Football Club we would like to wish all the officials, players, sponsors, supporters and villagers of Lavant a very prosperous New Year.

Thank You

Thank you goes especially to our sponsors and supporters who again this season have kindly backed the village football club. They include the Giles and Ruth landlords of The Earl of March, Alan & Sue Smith, John & Jan Squires, Richard & Sheila Sims, John Penn, Mike Miligan, The Lavant Fete Committee and Lavant Parish Council.

Without your continued support for the village football club, Lavant FC would not be on the secure footing the club finds itself today.

Lavant Village Green December 2012

View from the village hall's cricket pavilion looking towards the river Lavant

Can you believe it. In 2009 the village green was covered in snow, but this year at the end of December after months of rain the river Lavant has burst its banks and flooded the village green right up to the hall, also flooding the car park.

View from the road bridge at East Lavant looking towards the village green. Both roads are closed off due to flooding

It was hope that we could have finally marked out the pitch on the green and use it in the New Year. But certainly for the foreseeable future this is not going to be possible.

View looking down the road between the village green and river Lavant

Also the water had reached inside the village hall and the changing rooms so they are likely to be out of action for the next couple of weeks while things are cleared up.  That is as long as the rain stops and we have a period of drier weather?

As a result the fixtures for January published below could well be subject to change depending on the village hall availability.

The weather is also affecting league fixtures elsewhere for both the Saturday and Sunday leagues games so fixtures do keep changing.

But we will let you know of any changes on the Website either on the News or Fixtures & Results pages.

Please note that due to the bad weather conditions lately, fixtures could be re-arranged at short notice.  This is especially happening with the West Sussex League.

Additional to this we currently have a problem with the Village Hall changing rooms in that the river Lavant burst its banks and flooded the village green right up to the hall causing water to enter the hall.  Water levels are now reducing due to the drier weather; however it is currently not known when we will be able to use the changing rooms.  The plan is to try and ask to leagues to cancel all home games for all three teams for the first two weeks in January, in order that the hall can be cleared up.

We will keep you posted.

The Chichester 10K run on Sunday 3rd February is a fund raiser for St Wilfred's Hospice. You are all expected to participate in this.
The football clubs management committe decided at our last meeting that it would be good to give something back to the local community.

I have attached a sponsorship form for everyone.  The aim is for everyone to raise at least £50 (£17 of this will be your fee for entering the race, the remainder goes to St Wilfred's).

All entrants must be completed by no later than the 16th January (this event normally sells out quickly so the quicker you book online the better).  If you are struggling for cash, Lavant will substitute your cost – this is a loan, not a donation.

Bosham secured a narrow 1-0 victory at home to Lavant in the West Sussex League premier division courtesy of a goal scored by Joe Hancock and set up by brother Jack.

In a largely scrappy game where chances were at a premium for both sides, Bosham put up a workmanlike performance and will be pleased to have taken all three points to continue their climb towards the top of the table.

The breakthrough didn’t come until 58 minutes when a ball over the top from defender Jack Hancock was cushioned down by sibling Joe, who then drove low underneath Lavant goalkeeper Neil Sanson from 12 yards for his tenth goal of the campaign.

Lavant rarely threatened - a free-kick from a good position striking the Bosham wall. Any good build-up was often let down by the visitors’ finishing or last-ditch tackles from the solid defensive partnership of Ben Blanshard and Matt Docherty.

Neil Redman misfired late on for the home side when well-placed from a dangerous cross by substitute Ben Evans, who could have had a goal himself with a delicate chip from the right, which came back off the angle of post and bar before being hacked clear.

Bosham boss Tony Hancock said: “In the first half there were only really two passages of play where we were able to get the ball down and play, and in the second we really should have killed the game off, but had you offered me a 1-0 win at the start, I would have taken it.”

Match Report 17th November

Lavant 1 Newtown Villa 2

Matt Doyle's 56 min header clinched this game for the visitors at Raughmere Park as he met a Matt Robb corner.

Lavant started well but Newtown gradually worked their way into the game. The game had few chances and was evenly balanced until Bryn Hauxwell drove a 25 yard shot through a ruck of players. Lavant's 'keeper, Neil Sanson, who was unsighted did well to block the shot but Matt Russell was first to the rebound to put Villa ahead on 27 minutes.

The homeside were too anxious to level the score and their build up passing game suffered as a result. Hopeful balls on the edge of the attacking third were easily picked up by the visitors' defence.

After half-time Lavant were more patient but hopes of levelling the score were dashed when Doyle hit what turned out to be the winner.

Manager, David Parker, made a double substitution and changed the formation to give emphasis to a more attacking game. This was rewarded when the homeside were awarded a penalty when James Sandford was upended in the box following Lavant's increased pressure.

James Brooks pulled Lavant back into the game from his 61st minute spot kick. A Sandford cross gave Mike Bartley a chance to grab the equaliser but he failed to connect with his header.

Fullback, Matt Lyttle commented: "It's going to be like this for us in the Premier. Only one goal in it. And with few chances, we have to make each one count."

Match Report 10th November

Faygate 1 Lavant 0

The league leaders Faygate picked up a further 3 points in this evenly balanced game with a goal one minute before halftime.

One individual defensive error let striker Ben Friar send the home side in ahead at half time.

The second half saw Lavant edging it for the majority of the game. Captain Matt Stevens headed over from a Mike Neville cross early on.  Though Tom Routley came close from a fine Faygate build up on 52 minutes.

Lavant's Mike Bartley glancing header brought a fine stop from keeper Lee Ames 7 minutes later.

A Lavant substitution and a change to 3 up front in 82 minute increased the visitor's pressure but not enough to grab the deserved equaliser.

Lavant Manager David Parker declared at the end "this was our best performance of this season. One mind, one compact unit. It bodes well. I'm delighted".

Match Report 3rd November

Cowfold 1 Lavant 1

Cowfold might feel disappointed that they didn't take all three points in this encounter, especially as they hit the Lavant woodwork three times. But the match settled round the homeside having most of the possession and applying pressure against a well organised Lavant defence, content to strike with counterattacks.

Cowfold's Nigel Smith, always a threat, nearly broke through early on but a resolute tackle by Jon Wright forced him to slice his shot wide.

The visitors went close with a Mike Neville – James Sandford combination. If Sandford had not cut his toe-nails that morning he might have connected with Mike Bartley's cross to give the Chichester side the lead. Ironically, it was the immediate counter to this that gave Cowfold the lead when Mike Nash's shot hit the net on the half-hour. Three minutes later, Cowfold 'keeper Matt Beck tipped Louis Weller's shot over the bar.

In the second half, Cowfold increased the pressure but Lavant stood firm and soon had the homeside pinned in their own half. It was fitting then that when Dave McClean fed Bartley, the Lavant striker in a repeat of the first half move, teed up Sandford (whose toe-nails must have grown during the game) to level the score ten minutes from time.

Lavant: N.Sanson, C.Coe, J.Wright, B.Purgavie, M.Lyttle, M.Neville, D.Maclean, M.Stevens, L.Weller, M.Bartley, J.Sandford. Subs: R.Gabb, A.Holmes

Match Report 27th October

Upper Beeding 2 Lavant 3

Lavant made the long trip to Upper Beeding this Saturday hoping to get something out of the game and bounce back from last week's disappointing defeat against Bosham.

Both sides started the game lively, with the homeside just having the better of the opening fifteen minutes.

But Lavant worked hard to break down the passing game of Upper Beeding and soon the visitors started to force mistakes from the homeside as they forced their way back into the game.  Their hard work then paid dividends with twenty minutes gone as Ryan Seacombe chased down keeper Ciaran Towse's attempted clearance, as the ball defected off Seacombe and into the empty goal, 0-1.

The game was now wide open as both teams pushed forward and counterattacked at every opportunity. But it was Lavant who once more took the advantage with Mike Neville breaking free down the right wing and crossing in a delightful ball into the box, for the incoming James Sandford to head home Lavant's second of the game, 0-2.

The remainder of the first half saw Upper Beeding push forward in an attempt to get back into the game, as Lavant somewhat sat back and decided to defend their lead going into the break.  At times Lavant rode their luck but the homeside were unable penetrate the defence and get close in on goal, so the odd shot from distance was comfortably saved by Lavant keeper Neil Sanson.

In the second half with the wind behind them and a renewed determination the homeside started positively moving the ball quickly and breaking down the flanks, pushing Lavant back to defend their goal.

Lavant soaked up the pressure and looked dangerous once more on the counterattack.  On 65 minutes Sandford was brought down in the box as the referee awarded Lavant a penalty. Mike Bartley stepped up and took the spot kick, but Towse pulled off a great save diving low to his right-hand side and somehow managing to palm the ball wide of the post and out for a corner.

This was a turning point, as it would have been game over for the homeside but it again gave them another chance to stay in the game, which they grasped as five minutes later they scored, as the ball bounced in off the bar reducing the deficit, 1-2.

The game was once more wide open as Upper Beeding pushed forward for the equaliser. But Lavant defended well and when possible counterattacked.

Sandford then took advantage of a mistake by the Upper Beeding full backs to run though and round the keeper and slot home Lavant's third restoring their two nil buffer, 1-3.

The homeside once more fought back and took advantage of a rare Lavant defensive mix-up, to stab home the ball past the coming Sanson, 2-3.

The remaining 15 minutes of this hard fought game was eventful, with both teams having opportunities to score, but it was the visitor's hard work and staunch defending which eventually paid off, as they ran down the clock, to bag three precious league points.

Lavant: N.Sanson, C.Coe, J.Wright, T.Parker, M.Lyttle, M.Neville, M.Bartley, M.Stevens, L.Weller, R.Seacombe, J.Sandford. Subs: R.Gabb, A.Holmes.

Match Report 20th October

Lavant 2 Bosham 3

Bosham on this showing must have every chance to challenge for the Premier Title. Good defending, accurate passing and movement and patient build ups in front of the opponents' goal were a pleasure to watch.

Nevertheless for the first quarter hour  Lavant had most of the play and looked likelier to score. Eventually, the visitors came into the game and might have taken the first half but for Lavant 's compact and organised defending. Half time saw an evenly balanced and goalless game.

Then, came the turning point of the match. Lacking concentration Lavant conceded within a minute of the restart as Joe Hancock gave Bosham the lead with a fine finish.

This required the homeside to abandon their tactics and go all out for the equaliser. They won a corner but when Bosham cleared the resulting swift counter-attack put the visitors 2-0 in front with another fine Hancock finish on 65mins.

Mike Bartley and James Sandford had come close earlier for Lavant. Manager, David Parker, made two substitutions and changed the formation. As this was happening Lavant had conceded a corner and uncharacteristically left Nick Edgington to have a free run into the box to put the visitors in what seemed an unassailable position with his 82nd min header.

But the tactical change Lavant had effected came into play and the homeside pulled two back through Bartley in the 83rd and 86th minute.

Substitute Alex Holmes almost scored the equaliser for the homeside two minutes from time.

Lavant Boss Parker commented; "Bosham are the team we want to emulate. But all that hard work in the first half was wasted by lack of concentration on their 1st & 3rd goals. You can't do that at this level. But we will learn and improve."

This Time 30 Year's Ago

Lavant coach Mike Kent has come across a programme which is of the Premier Division fixture between Bosham and Lavant some 30 years ago on the 23rd of October 1982.

Mike was actually playing for Lavant's first team at the age of sixteen, wearing the number 11 shirt and leading the attack, so he kept the progamme as a memento of his early footballing days.

In the Bosham programme there is also section about Lavant titled "News of Today's Visitors".

Also there is a player profile for the Lavant squad.
Mike we all know is still vey much involved with the club, helping out with training and Richard Sims also mentioned, attends and watches Lavant's game most weeks.

Richard Sims: Centre forward. 3 seasons with the club.

Mike Kent: Aged 16. In his first season with Lavant. Previously with Chichester City

The teams line up is listed below and Lavant were noted as playing in all yellow, with Bosham in red, white and red.  The same as it will be at this weekends fixture at Lavant.

Lavant: 1. D.Bulbeck, 2.  S.Homer, 3. J.Rouse, 4. S.James, 5. K.Duke, 6. B.Massey, 7. T.Worsfield, 8. D.Massey, 9. R.Sims, 10. K.Goff,
11. M.Kent, 12. I Callow, 13. T.Southall

The league table as of the 16th October 1982 saw the now current County League Division 1 leaders East Preston top of the league, having played seven and won seven. Note only two points for a win in those days!

East Preston 14, Rustington 10, Bourne Park 10, Ferring 9, Sun Alliance 8, Sidlesham 8, Petworth 7, Eastergate Utd 6, Southwater 5 , Fernhurst 4, Lavant 3 , Midway 2, Bosham 2, Emsworth 0.

Nine of the fourteen clubs are still in existance, with six in the West Sussex League and three in the Sussex County League.

Both, Lavant (having played 5 and had 3 points) and Bosham (having played 6 and had 2 points) were in the bottom four of the league and needing to put some results together in order to move up the table.  So this game 30 years ago was an important fixture.

Wonder what the score was?

Lets hope this Saturday's result goes to Lavant, as these two clubs meet once more in the West Sussex Premier league 30 years on.

Match Report 6th October

The Premier League leaders entertained Lavant at their home ground at Hunston. The visitor's, however controlled the first half with organised defending and speedy counterattacks.

Early on Rob Chiverton in goal pulled off two impressive saves from Ryan Seacombe and then Louis Weller. So when Matt Lyttle swung in the resulting corner, Mike Bartley headed Lavant in front after only 6 minutes. The same corner was replicated, this time for captain Matt Stevens to head the second in off the crossbar just before the quarter hour.

A corner at the other end found Nathan Agate strike from a narrow angle but Lavant 'keeper, Neil Sanson, was up to the challenge to also pull off a fine save. It was Hunston's only serious threat of the first half.

At the restart, Weller on 54mins and Seacombe on 61mins forced two fine saves from Chiverton. But, thereafter, the momentum was with the homeside who capitalised on their advantage, when Leeroy Sweeney pulled Hunston back into the game with a low powerful shot in the 65th minute.

Lavant soaked up pressure and both Seacombe and Sweeney missed sitters in the final seconds of the game to leave Lavant picking up a vital 3 points.

Hunston: Chiverton, O'Hala, Lomas, Gilbert, M.Walker, Harding, Bornand, Stanley, Molnar, Sweeney, Agate. Subs: G.Walker, Hughes

Lavant: N.Sanson, C.Coe, B.Purgavie, J.Wright, M.Lyttle, M.Neville, D.Maclean, M.Stevens, L.Weller, R.Seacombe, M.Bartley. Subs: N.Latham
